Description:

The McMaster University Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program training is a five-year program. Two residents are accepted every year. During the first two years, trainees receive Surgical Foundations training to provide a solid background in the principles of surgery related to Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. During Surgical Foundations training, 24 weeks are spent within the home program each year and the remaining 28 weeks are spent off service. By having the faculty work with the residents early on helps to build a strong mentorship role from the faculty at the start of their residency. The last three years of residency is spent on service with the addition of 4 weeks on a community rotation, 4 weeks on an elective rotation during PGY3, and 4 weeks on an optional elective rotation during PGY4. The emphasis during the PGY3 year is on General Otolaryngology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Laryngology and in basic Head and Neck/Endocrine Surgery. The emphasis in the PGY4 year is on Otology, Neurotology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Rhinology, Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery as well as Head and Neck/Endocrine oncology. The emphasis in the senior PGY5 year is on Head and Neck/Endocrine oncology, Otology, Neurotology and a consolidation in advanced Endoscopic Sinus/Skull base Surgery, Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery and advanced Pediatric Otolaryngology. All residents are required to participate in either clinical or basic science research during their training. The residents will present their research at the Annual Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Research Day held in October. Also the residents have opportunities to present their research at national and international conferences.

The strengths of the McMaster Otolaryngology-Head and Neck program are the enthusiastic teaching by the faculty, the family atmosphere that prevails among the staff and the residents, and the early hands on experience in a surgical suite.
